What is the Triangle Area of North Carolina?

The Triangle or Research Triangle is located in the heart of North Carolina's Piedmont area, situated between the beautiful western mountains and the wonderful eastern seashore.  The Research Triangle derived its name from the three major research universities located in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill: NC State, Duke and UNC, respectively. The Triangle is also home to Research Triangle Park, one of the nation's largest and most well known high-tech research and development parks in the U.S.  The Triangle Triangle area boasts a population in excess of 2,000,000 residents and, depending on who you ask, includes 3 to 16 counties.
